Get Ready for a weekend of Contradance

Ok, what is Contradance?

Here comes my curiosity again!

I don’t really know what it is, I do know it looks fun and sounds fun.

An all ages event with lots of live music and plenty of twirling.

An elderly square dancer once explained Contradance to me, he said it was like square dancing without the square.  He talked of how he had been a square dancer with his wife, and she had passed away.  His friends insisted he go to a Contradance, but he thought it was some kind of Latin dance and didn’t want any part of it.  One day, his friend dragged him out to a Contradance and he was hooked and so glad he had been a square dancer because he understood the calls and moves.

That about sums up my knowledge on Contradancing.

This weekend is the Contra Borealis Dancers Winter Weekend Dance.  There will be workshops at UAF and the Pioneer Park dance hall and lots of good music and more dancing.

My plan is to get out there and check out what it is and talk to the dancers, callers and musicians.  I will bring it back to you, right here on this blog, so be sure to pop back in and see what I’ve discovered.

Swing on until next time!
